Tam Sze Yan (b.2002, Shenzhen) is a Hong Kong based artist, graduated in 2025 from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Fine Arts (BA). Tam sometimes does art sometimes doesn’t, still figuring out how to be a human being.

She works across installation, moving image and painting. Her work is guided by her curiosity about how the unseen passes into the visible—how subliminal tension, emotional imbalance, or subjective perception can reverberate beneath the surface of seemingly normal existence.

She frequently takes inspiration from social norms, familial ties, and casual observation. Yet rather than presenting them as documentation, she distorts, exaggerates, and re-stages them through a fictional lens. With a sense of humour that borders on absurdity, her work unsettles realism and slips into a dreamlike language.

Moving fluidly between media, Tam explores the friction between emotional intimacy and structural control—how people relate to each other when roles blur, rules break down, or communication falters. Her installations often involve subtle disruptions to space or image logic; her videos combine scripted performance with improvisation and childlike interventions. Painting, for her, is another site where mental landscapes and social distortion collide. Tam makes fiction a way to tell the truth about emotions by composing tales that are almost believable.
